The NEOS have asked for patience in the debate over military service reform and indicated to the "Krone" (Saturday edition) that a compromise with six months of basic military service and two months of militia exercises would be conceivable for them.

Background of the Negotiations

The negotiations over the future of Austrian military service are ongoing. NEOS parliamentary group leader Yannick Shetty pointed out on Saturday that several models were on the table and appealed for understanding for the ongoing process. "Six months of negotiation process for a really major reform is not forever now," said Shetty with regard to the scope of the project.

The NEOS advocate a voluntary model, which was rejected as "completely unacceptable" by the chairman of the military service commission, Erwin Hameseder. The "Krone" reported on Saturday, citing party circles, that the NEOS had abandoned their rejection of a basic military service of six months plus two months of militia exercises: "Six plus two would be feasible for us, but no more," was reportedly said.

At the same time, Shetty emphasized that a decision does not "become right" by being unpopular. He also pointed to Sweden as a model: "We prefer the design in Sweden: conscription obligation for all, including men and women," one would deviate slightly here and "invite" everyone to report for assessment. He did not fundamentally reject an obligation to serve, but insisted on voluntariness in the 具体Ausgestaltung.
