At daybreak, the woman was located in the Knappenhof area on the Rax. According to the emergency services, she was safe and unharmed. Initial findings indicated that medical treatment was not required.

Operation leader Michael Slanar expressed relief at the outcome of the search operation. He thanked the mountain rescue teams involved and the police for their perseverance during the hours-long search through the night. The Rax cable car was also explicitly praised for quickly providing the booking data.

The Rax as a hiking area

The Rax is a popular hiking area in Lower Austria and attracts numerous tourists, especially in summer. Some of the trails lead through alpine terrain where hikers can easily lose their way in poor visibility or when their stamina wanes. The Reichenau mountain rescue service is regularly deployed in such cases.

The incident underscores the importance of carrying complete equipment on mountain tours, in particular a charged mobile phone. The emergency services pointed out that a dead battery can significantly complicate location tracking and thus the swift provision of help. Carrying an emergency lamp and sufficient water is also recommended.

The woman was handed over into the care of her relatives after her recovery. The exact circumstances of how she had strayed from her planned route were not initially known. The police and the Reichenau mountain rescue service announced that they would reconstruct the course of the hike together with the woman.

The operation ended in the morning after roughly twelve hours of searching. The organisations involved took stock and emphasised the good cooperation of all the bodies involved. From the emergency services' perspective, the case demonstrates how important rapid communication and modern location technology are in mountain rescue.
