Missing Person Case Solved After 35 Years: 22-Year-Old Died on Innsbruck's Nordkette

After his disappearance, extensive search operations were launched, in which also alpine-experienced rescue forces and dog handlers were deployed. The body, however, was not initially found. Only through targeted subsequent searches in the following years and through the evaluation of old leads and witness statements did the area around the Vordere Brandjochspitze come back into the focus of investigators.

DNA Brings the Turning Point

The decisive breakthrough was ultimately brought by a DNA analysis. Comparison material from relatives of the missing man made it possible to clearly identify the recovered bones. It is thus now established that the South Tyrolean did not – as was sometimes assumed – die of natural causes while mountaineering, but through an act of violence.

The Tyrolean mountain police took over the further investigations. They assume that the then 22-year-old was killed on the Nordkette on the day of his disappearance. According to the investigators, there were no indications of an accident with subsequent recovery by third parties or of a suicide.

Investigation Against Deceased Suspect

In the course of the investigations, a suspect was also placed in the focus. According to the current state of the investigations, the suspicion is directed against a person who is already deceased. An indictment or court proceedings are therefore no longer possible, as the Innsbruck public prosecutor's office confirmed.

For the relatives of the victim, the identification nevertheless brings closure after decades of uncertainty. After the disappearance of the young man, the family had always been guided by the hope that he might still be alive, before all search operations remained without results.

Closure for the Family

The case attracted attention beyond the borders of the province, not least because South Tyrolean media repeatedly addressed the missing man over the years. The identification has now been published both in Innsbruck and in South Tyrol with official notices.

The authorities emphasized that the DNA analyses would not have been possible without the assistance of relatives who provided comparison material. The persistence of the investigating officers, who did not file the case away over the decades, also ultimately led to its resolution.

Despite the solved case, the Nordkette remains demanding alpine terrain. Mountain rescue and police point out that tours in this area should still be undertaken today only with sufficient experience, suitable equipment, and registration with relatives or mountain guides.
