A 66-year-old German hiker fell around 300 meters down steep, partly rocky terrain on a high-altitude trail in South Tyrol on Wednesday and died in the process.
According to the Italian mountain rescue service, the accident occurred in the Senges valley in the municipality of Freienfeld, near the 2,243-meter Pretz Peak. The hiker had been traveling with other people on a section of the Pfunderer High Trail when he apparently strayed from the marked path and stumbled.
The 66-year-old lost his footing and then fell around 300 meters to his death, the rescue teams said. South Tyrolean media reported consistently that the man had fallen down steep, partly rocky terrain. The exact cause of the accident was not initially known.
