Missunde III: Ferry is back in service – repair cost 60,000 euros

Operator wants to continue running it through the summer

As the LKN further explained, the electric motor's drivetrain was realigned in order to minimise wear in the future. The agency's spokesperson, Wolf Paarmann, expressed confidence: "Wir sind zuversichtlich, dass die Missunde III nun in ruhigeres Fahrwasser kommen wird." Paarmann also thanked everyone involved: "Wir bedanken uns bei allen, die es möglich gemacht haben, diesen Schaden innerhalb so kurzer Zeit zu beheben", said the agency's spokesperson, Wolf Paarmann.

Operator Rüdiger Jöns confirmed the resumption of service to NDR Schleswig-Holstein. He said he wanted to continue running the ferry this summer and then assess the situation. He had previously called the economic viability of the operation into question on social media.

Commuters had to take long detours

During the three-week interruption, commuters had to accept a detour of almost 40 kilometres around the Schlei. The outage weighed on the region as well as on commuters. The agency itself also used the forced pause: temporary structures at both landings have been developed into permanent solutions.

Already at the launch in April, wedges at the landings had been weighted down with ten-tonne weights to give the ferry a stable abutment when docking. Test runs had shown that the two wedges required additional weights. Landings stabilised At the same time, the pause was used to remove the temporary structures at the landings.

Fare increase planned for 1 July

The solar-powered ferry had originally gone into service two years later than planned because the ship and the landings had to be modified. A price increase of 50 cents per car is now planned for 1 July. Until now, the fare has started at three euros without additional passengers.

Background: Launch came after years of delay

Service is officially set to start on Tuesday, the Schleswig-Holstein Agency for Coastal Protection, National Park and Marine Protection (LKN) announced. The "Missunde III" has been shuttling between Brodersby and Kosel since late April. Around 120,000 vehicles and around 50,000 bicycles are ferried across between Brodersby and Kosel each year.
