Moderna announced on Monday the development of a vaccine against the Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus in response to the ongoing outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) is supporting the project with up to $50 million for preclinical development and initial clinical trials of the vaccine candidate. US biotech company Moderna stated that it is developing the vaccine in collaboration with CEPI.

The outbreak has so far claimed an estimated 350 lives. More than 900 suspected cases and over 220 probable deaths have been registered in connection with the wave of illness affecting eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring Uganda.
