The World Health Organization declared an international health emergency Tuesday as an Ebola outbreak spread across eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and into Uganda, with 528 suspected cases and 132 deaths reported.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed deep concern about the 'scale and speed' of the outbreak, particularly noting cases appearing in urban areas and the deaths of healthcare workers. The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, while less deadly than the Zaire variant that caused the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic, still carries a mortality rate around 37%.
This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in DR Congo since the virus was first identified in 1976, but only the third caused by the Bundibugyo strain. Previous Bundibugyo outbreaks occurred in Uganda in 2007 (37 deaths) and Congo in 2012 (29 deaths). Unlike the Zaire strain, there are no approved vaccines or treatments specifically for Bundibugyo.
