More Aggression on German Streets: Traffic Psychologists and Municipalities Sound the Alarm

Traffic psychologist Wolfgang Fastenmeier describes conflicts that can be observed on many roads. Anger, tailgating, and insults have reportedly increased. The professional association Fußverkehr Deutschland FUSS e.V. and the accident insurer UDV also report a sharpening of the tone between car, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.

Reactions from the Municipalities

Cities such as Munich and Berlin are trying to respond with new concepts. These include speed limits, expanded pedestrian zones, and dialogue formats. Kirsten Zeidler from the City of Munich explained that conflicts between car drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians had increased significantly and that the administration was looking for solutions together with associations.

Roland Stimpel from Auto Club Europa also describes cases in which cut curb edges were ridden into against the opened door of a parked car. The association interprets such incidents as an expression of a broader brutalization of behavior in road space. Police in several federal states report, according to their own statements, an increase in insults and coercion in traffic.

Andreas Knie sees politics as having a duty to create clear rules for the future division of road space. Without reliable guidelines, the mobility researcher says, the conflict between user groups will persist and could continue to intensify. The municipalities are also demanding more funds from the federal government in order to implement their concepts.

The accident insurers and traffic associations are calling for a broad societal debate about consideration and rules on the roads. They point out that aggression negatively affects not only the sense of safety but also accident statistics. At the same time, they emphasize that sustainable behavioral change takes time and can only be achieved through permanent investment in infrastructure and education.

In the coming months, several cities intend to bundle their measures and exchange their experiences at a nationwide congress.
