Researchers at the Swiss Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) report in the journal "Nature" that desert dust pollution in Europe has risen by ten to 25 percent over the past ten years and has more than doubled over 150 years.

The study, reported on by Deutschlandfunk on 18 July 2026, paints a nuanced picture of the development: it is not the number of dust storms that has increased, but rather the intensity of individual events.
