Gianni Infantino is steering toward his re-election as FIFA President at the Congress on March 18, 2027 in Rabat with broad backing, according to information from the "Guardian," while the German Football Association (DFB) is the most prominent association to refuse its signature.
As the British newspaper reports, citing sources close to world football's governing body, "more than 200" of the total 211 FIFA member associations have signed a corresponding letter of support. This would mean the 56-year-old already has the required majority for re-election. According to the report, only a handful of the 211 associations have not signed a letter of support. "A small number of European countries are among the exceptions," the paper writes.
Unlike the German Football Association (DFB), the overwhelming majority of the 211 FIFA member countries favor the re-election of Gianni Infantino as President of the world governing body. The DFB stated upon request: "Der DFB hat kein Unterstützungsschreiben für die Wiederwahl von Gianni Infantino unterzeichnet." It added: "Weitere Schritte werden im DFB-Präsidium beraten." According to "Bild," the FIFA director responsible for Europe lobbied for signatures from the 16 European participants during the World Cup finals in North America.
