Catania, July 5, 2026

Mount Etna on Sicily intensified its ash emissions on Sunday morning, prompting the temporary closure of Catania Airport.

Background: Europe's largest active volcano

Volcanic activity at Etna began to increase in the early morning hours, according to Italy's National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). At around 8:45 a.m., the eruption intensified noticeably. An eruption cloud rose approximately 1.5 kilometers above the summit of the volcano.

At around 3,350 meters high, Etna is Europe's largest active volcano. It sometimes erupts several times a year and is constantly monitored by experts. The exact height of the volcano changes repeatedly due to eruptions and scoria cones.
