Mount Etna on Sicily erupted on Sunday morning, temporarily paralyzing air traffic in Catania.

Early-morning eruption

The roughly 3,350-meter Etna, Europe's largest active volcano, intensified its activity in the morning at around 8:45 a.m. According to Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), an eruption cloud rose about 1.5 kilometers above the volcano's summit and drifted toward the south and south-southeast.

The released ash severely disrupted flight operations at Catania airport. Operator SAC announced that the airspace in the area affected by the ash cloud would remain closed until 7:00 p.m. local time.

Until around 9:00 p.m. local time, the airport would only be able to handle about five arriving flights per hour, SAC added. The closure was initially set to last until 7:00 p.m.
