Mourning for Lydia Möcklinghoff: Maus Team Says Farewell to Science Journalist

Lydia Möcklinghoff was known to the German public primarily through her contributions to the children's program Die Sendung mit der Maus. She worked as a science journalist, zoologist, and adventurer and produced, among other things, the podcast Tierisch!. Alongside her journalistic work, she published books such as Die Supernasen and Ich glaub, mein Puma pfeift: Als Forscherin im reichsten Tierparadies der Welt.

Since 2009, Möcklinghoff had been researching the behavior, ecology, and lifestyle of giant anteaters in the Pantanal. The Cologne-based researcher was regarded internationally as one of the leading experts on this animal species. In an interview from 2016, she confessed that she was practically enchanted by anteaters. She described her charges as peculiar, somewhat sluggish, and living in a parallel universe.

Reactions from Dortmund Zoo and the Maus Team

According to Dortmund Zoo, Möcklinghoff's research findings informed the keeping and management of giant anteaters in zoos for many years. Insights from her work also helped improve protection measures for the threatened species. On Instagram, the researcher documented her encounters with jaguars, giant otters, and her favorite anteaters.
