The science journalist and anteater researcher Lydia Möcklinghoff was killed on 3 July at the age of 45 in a plane crash in Brazil, as confirmed by the team behind Sendung mit der Maus and Dortmund Zoo.

According to her Instagram account @lydialoveswildlife, the Cologne-based researcher was traveling that Friday in a small aircraft over the Pantanal, a vast wetland region in South America, when the accident occurred. The pilot of the plane also died in the crash. According to the editorial team of Sendung mit der Maus, the crash already took place on 3 July; the WDR program Aktuelle Stunde reported on the incident on 5 July 2026 at 6:45 p.m.
