Mudslide and flash flood at Nepal-China border leave at least 160 dead and more than 1,000 missing

Rescue teams from both countries were dispatched to the border zone within hours of the disaster. Helicopters and ground crews worked to evacuate stranded residents and recover bodies from debris fields, though difficult terrain, ongoing instability on the slopes, and damaged access routes complicated the response. Temporary shelters were being set up for displaced families.

Monsoon season raises risk of further landslides

The timing of the event, late in the South Asian monsoon season, raised immediate concerns about the risk of further landslides in the saturated Himalayan foothills. Meteorologists in the region noted that the border area has historically experienced intense late-summer rainfall, which can destabilize steep slopes and trigger the kind of debris flows seen on Wednesday.

Gyirong Port is one of the principal trade and travel crossings between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region, sitting in a deep river valley at high elevation. The crossing has been used for centuries by traders, pilgrims, and laborers moving between the two countries, and its disruption has implications both for local livelihoods and for cross-border commerce.

Communications infrastructure in the area was severely affected. Phone lines, mobile networks, and internet services went down across much of the affected zone, forcing authorities to rely on satellite phones and intermittent radio contact to coordinate relief. Families on both sides of the border waited anxiously for news of relatives who had been in the area when the flood struck.

Rescue and relief operations

On the Chinese side of the border, emergency management authorities in Tibet activated a major disaster response, deploying rescue teams, medical personnel, and supplies to the hardest-hit areas. On the Nepali side, the Home Ministry directed district administrators to begin relief operations and to compile damage assessments.

Aid groups warned that the remote geography of the affected area would slow the delivery of food, clean water, and medical supplies to survivors. Pre-positioned stocks of emergency relief material stored at the border crossing were themselves damaged or buried, complicating the early stages of the humanitarian response.

Cross-border coordination and recovery

The disaster drew comparisons to previous catastrophic floods and landslides in the Himalayan region, where changing weather patterns and increasingly intense rainfall events have been linked by researchers to heightened risks of slope failure. The full extent of the damage at Gyirong is expected to take days to assess as access is restored.

Diplomatic channels between Kathmandu and Beijing were active as both governments coordinated the cross-border response. Officials on both sides stressed the need for joint search operations and for the rapid restoration of at least one functioning border crossing to allow aid convoys to reach affected communities.
