The Lower Austrian Gregor Mühlberger defended his overall lead on Friday on the third stage of the 75th Tour of Austria and goes into the decisive final phase wearing the jersey of the national team as the race leader.
Stage course and race action
The 189.5-kilometer stage led from Lienz via Mittersill to St. Johann im Pongau and posed demanding challenges for the riders. A 25-rider breakaway group had already formed at the Felbertauern, which also included candidates for the overall classification. Mühlberger himself stayed in the peloton together with his national team and crossed the finish line 1:47 minutes back in 20th place.
The stage win went to the American Neilson Powless, who prevailed against his companions on a vicious final climb. "Ich bin sehr glücklich", Powless said in the ORF interview. For the 28-year-old, it was the first victory in a long time, after he had endured a serious knee operation and the associated self-doubt. "Da war heute mehr drin", noted Michael Gogl, the best Austrian in seventh place, who had lost contact with Powless and Igor Arrieta on a descent around 44 kilometers from the finish.
