The fires extended across several municipalities in the Waldviertel. In addition to Schwarzenau and Windigsteig, Blumau an der Wild was also involved in the extinguishing operations. Due to the spatial distribution of the fire sites, the response units had to coordinate their arrival and partially set up shuttle operations between the deployment locations. Arson as a Possible Cause

The Franz-Josefs-Bahn connects Vienna with the Waldviertel and runs through sparsely populated areas. Along such railway lines, vegetation fires occur repeatedly during the summer months, as dry embankments are easily ignitable. According to fire department information, this year's weather conditions, with persistent dryness, had favored the spread of the flames.

No information about possible injuries or damage to trains and infrastructure was initially available. The ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) preemptively took the affected section of the line out of service in order not to jeopardize the extinguishing operations and to inspect the damaged areas on the railway embankment. When the Franz-Josefs-Bahn can be fully operated again on the affected section was still unclear in the morning.

The police have initiated investigations into the cause of the fire. It is being examined whether there is a connection between the individual fire sites or whether the fires originated independently of one another. The amount of property damage and possible civil law consequences will be the subject of further investigations.

The response units praised the quick reaction of the local fire brigades. The rapid deployment and good coordination between the brigades from Schwarzenau, Windigsteig, and the surrounding area prevented the fires from spreading to inhabited areas. In the late morning, the response units increasingly reported "fire out" at the individual fire sites.
