A forest fire that has been raging since Wednesday midday near Saumos, not far from Bordeaux, has spread across several thousand hectares and triggered the evacuation of around 20,000 tourists and residents on France's Atlantic coast.

The fire broke out on Wednesday midday in the locality of Saumos, about 40 kilometers from Bordeaux, and spread rapidly toward Le Porge and Lège-Cap-Ferret. According to the prefecture in Bordeaux, the blaze had expanded to around 2,400 hectares by Thursday midday, while other reports spoke of 4,800 hectares by the evening. The course of the firefighting operation was "very positive," the authorities said, but the situation remained "unfavorable."
