The music biopic "Michael" about Michael Jackson has overtaken the historical drama "Oppenheimer" as the most successful biopic worldwide, grossing around 977 million US dollars, according to the industry portal "Box Office Mojo."

The film, which premiered in April, had already far exceeded industry expectations upon its release. According to "Box Office Mojo," "Michael" reached a worldwide gross of around 977 million US dollars, pushing the previous record holder "Oppenheimer" into second place. Its worldwide gross stood at just under 975 million US dollars, according to available data.

A few weeks earlier, "Michael" had already surpassed the previously most successful music biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody." The film about Queen singer Freddie Mercury grossed 911 million dollars worldwide in 2018. With its leap past "Oppenheimer," the Jackson film has now set two record marks in the biopic genre in quick succession.
