Resignation off the table – for now

Asked about a possible resignation as head coach, Nagelsmann gave the idea a clear rejection. He said verbatim: „Ich bin keiner, der sagt, ich trete zurück, weil wir ausgeschieden sind. Wenn der DFB möchte, dass ich weitermache, mache ich weiter. Und wenn er das nicht möchte, dann muss man mir das sagen.“ He saw himself as carrying responsibility and wanted to wait for the talks.

According to information from association circles, the German Football Association (DFB) intends to decide on Nagelsmann's future only after the team's return to Germany. An immediate separation is therefore off the table for now, but a quick solution is also not in sight. The talks are to take place in Frankfurt in the coming days.

DFB wants to decide only in Germany

Observers interpret the trip as a first signal that Nagelsmann has not yet come to terms with the failure. The black clothing was widely read on social media as a symbol of mourning and disappointment. At the same time, with the clear message that he wanted to continue working, he also sent out a degree of defiance.

Sportingly, the team had played solidly in the group stage in the USA, but in the Round of 16 against Paraguay little came together. In the end, the result was a defeat that has reignited the debate over the coach, the lineup, and the association across the board. Players such as Musiala, who had still been hoping to win an international title in the tournament, traveled back visibly shaken.

What happens next?

If the DFB sticks with Nagelsmann, the next task would already be awaiting him with a view to the upcoming international matches. If, on the other hand, a separation occurs, the association would have to name a successor at short notice.
