Washington, June 04, 2026

The US space agency NASA has officially declared the end of the MAVEN mission in Mars orbit, as the agency announced on Thursday in Washington.

The MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) probe had been orbiting the Red Planet since 2014, thus delivering data from the Martian atmosphere for over a decade. The mission was originally planned for up to two years, but the probe transmitted far beyond its planned duration.

According to NASA, the last signal from the probe originated in December 2025. Since then, there has been no radio contact, the agency explained. The mission in the Martian atmosphere has now ended.

More Than a Decade in Mars Orbit

In recent years, MAVEN had provided key insights into how gases escape from the planet's atmosphere into space – a phenomenon known as atmospheric loss in technical jargon. According to NASA, the probe also provided clues about Mars' climatic past and its habitability.
