NASA has released an image of a double crater on the lunar surface, which according to the U.S. space agency was created by the impact of a decommissioned SpaceX rocket in March 2022.

The released crater shows an unusual structure: instead of a single circular impact hole, the images show two clearly overlapping depressions side by side. According to NASA, this double shape is a novel finding on the Moon and raises questions about the nature of the impacting object.

Unusual Double Structure

The shape of the crater suggests that the stage carried significant mass at its rear end at the time of impact.
