In Austria's Nationalrat, the debate over the budget of the Family Ministry under Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) began on Friday, with the suspended indexation of family benefits dominating the discussion.
According to information from the debate, family benefits are not expected to be indexed again until 2029. The FPÖ sharply criticized this step, calling the non-indexation a "Bankrotterklärung gegenüber Familien und Leistungsträgern." FPÖ family spokesperson Ricarda Berger also spoke of a "Raubzug" against those who keep the wheels turning. Berger further accused the government of treating the traditional family merely as an outdated obstacle.
Family Minister Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) acknowledged that the non-indexation had not been an easy decision for her party either. Her ministry unfortunately had to contribute to budget consolidation. At the same time, Bauer announced proactive measures, including the expansion of childcare facilities, where improvements were needed.
