Austria's Ministry of Education has sent new curricula for the AHS upper secondary level out for review, with computer science being strengthened, Latin reduced, and a new compulsory subject "Media and Democracy" to be introduced.

The amendment provides for computer science to increase from two to three weekly periods going forward. As the draft for review shows, instruction will be supplemented with the topic of AI and will receive the name "Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence." The ministry is thereby responding to the growing importance of digital and algorithmic competencies for school graduates.

At the same time, two weekly periods of Latin are being removed from the upper secondary curriculum. The classical language thus continues to lose weight in the AHS upper secondary level. Schools had already been able to offer Latin as an elective; going forward, the mandatory number of hours will decline.
