An international research team has scientifically described a new monkey species in the central Congo Basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo which, in the assessment of the scientists involved, is immediately threatened with extinction.
The newly described species bears the scientific name Colobus congoensis and is called "Likweli" by the local population. According to the researchers, it is a smaller relative of the black colobus (Colobus satanas), although the two populations are separated by more than 1,200 kilometers of forest. Genetic analyses, comparisons of body structure and acoustic recordings of the calls have confirmed the species' distinctness, the team writes in the journal "PLOS One".
