New Research Center for Drone Security Opens at Cochstedt Airport

Why Drones Are Becoming a Security Issue

At the new site, detection systems, jamming devices, and interception technologies are to be tested and further developed. The DLR contributes its expertise from aerospace research and robotics, while police, the Federal Police, and other authorities contribute their operational experience from deployments. The goal, according to Dobrindt, is "that we can not only detect drones, but also effectively neutralize them before damage occurs."

In addition to technical research, the center is also to serve as a training and exercise location. Operational forces from across the federal territory should be able to train here in a realistic manner on how to respond to different drone types – from commercially available mini-drones to professional reconnaissance systems. The test areas of the former regional airport in Cochstedt offer sufficient space and airspace for this purpose.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior also sees the center as a signal to civil society and industrial stakeholders. Drone technology is widely used in a meaningful way in business and science, for example in the inspection of industrial facilities, in agriculture, or in rescue operations in the Ahr Valley. However, the growing number of incidents shows that an independent defense capability is becoming indispensable for the state.

Economic Boost for Saxony-Anhalt

For Saxony-Anhalt, the establishment of the research center is also an economic boost. The region around Halle and the Harz Mountains has in recent years deliberately focused on technology and security research. According to the DLR, the new center will create additional jobs for scientists, engineers, and technical personnel, intended to strengthen the location in the long term.

In the coming months, the center is to gradually move into regular operation. Both national projects and participation in European research programs on drone defense are planned. Federal Interior Minister Dobrindt announced that initial results and demonstrators will be presented to the public later this year.

Further Measures for Aviation Security

Parallel to the establishment in Cochstedt, further initiatives to strengthen aviation security are underway in Germany. These include new regulations for drone flight bans near critical infrastructure, the expansion of jamming capacities at police and the Federal Police, as well as better recording of drone overflights through a central reporting office. The research center is to scientifically accompany these measures and continuously improve them.

With the opening in Cochstedt, the federal government is sending a signal that drone defense is understood as a cross-cutting task involving research, security authorities, and industry. The combination of a real test airport, scientific expertise, and official practice should, according to experts, help to better position Germany against one of the most dynamic threats in airspace.
