New Ringbahn Bridge on the A 100: Superstructure Sections to Be Lifted Into Place This Weekend

Background: Demolition and Traffic Chaos

The new bridge is intended to carry A 100 traffic in the northern direction over the tracks in the future. The new structure is being built at the same location as the old bridge, which is why a separate planning approval procedure was not required. The project was separated from the existing procedure for the renovation of the entire Funkturm motorway interchange.

The old Ringbahn bridge had been unexpectedly closed the previous year due to spreading damage to the supporting structure and demolished a few weeks later. The closure and demolition triggered traffic chaos in West Berlin. Shortly afterwards, the Westend Bridge, located further north, was also closed and demolished.

The Funkturm motorway interchange is one of the most heavily used highway sections in Germany. According to Deges, the gap on the A 100 created by the demolition is to be closed by summer 2027. The new A 100 bridge is to be completed as early as the first half of 2027.

Costs and Schedule

The total volume of the project is around 80 million euros. The speed of construction execution was a key award criterion. Both new bridge constructions are intended to serve as an example that infrastructure planning and construction in Germany can be carried out swiftly.

Impact on Rail Traffic

During the construction work over the weekend, the Ringbahn lines S 41 and S 42 are interrupted between Halensee and Westend. The S-Bahn is setting up a replacement service with barrier-free buses.

Deges stated that the construction of the Ringbahn bridge on the A 100 in West Berlin is on schedule. With the lifting of the prefabricated elements, the actual bridge body, which had been prepared beforehand, is now becoming visible.
