Leipzig, 7 July 2026
The Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) presented a study in Leipzig on Monday evening that identifies the Col de la Traversette in the Cottian Alps as the most likely route of Hannibal's crossing of the Alps with war elephants in 218 BC.
In the much-debated question of Hannibal's crossing of the Alps with elephants, a new study has provided evidence of the most likely route of the historic campaign. As the Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) announced in Leipzig on Monday evening, the calculations point to a specific pass between France and Italy.
Accordingly, the Col de la Traversette offers the most favorable conditions for the march of an army with war elephants. The research group calculated the energy requirements of the journey and examined which Alpine crossings were most bearable for humans and animals. According to the findings, the Traversette route is the most suitable in energetic and logistical terms.
