A study involving the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (Leibniz-IZW) has demonstrated that spotted hyenas use at least 13 different vocalizations during play – including five previously unknown ones.

Research question and method

The research group observed wild spotted hyenas in their natural habitat and systematically evaluated the animals' behavior. The study was published in the journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology. Involved were the University of Pisa, the Ngorongoro Hyena Project at the Leibniz-IZW, and the organization Siyafunda Wildlife & Conservation.

It is known that many mammals display a relaxed open mouth during play – in English "relaxed open mouth" (ROM) – to signal that the encounter should not escalate into a real fight. The new work shows that spotted hyenas use this signal flexibly in one-on-one play.
