New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Sunday became the first city leader in decades to boycott the annual Israel parade in Manhattan, triggering strong reactions.
Thousands of people marched through the streets of Manhattan with Israeli flags, blue and white balloons, and T-shirts reading "I love Israel." The parade has taken place annually in New York since the 1960s.
Mamdani, a US Democrat, is considered one of the most prominent pro-Palestinian politicians in the United States. He accuses Israel of systematic violations of Palestinian rights, speaks of apartheid, and describes Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip as genocide.
At the same time, Mamdani condemned the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, as a "heinous war crime." He has repeatedly emphasized that he advocates for equal rights for Israelis and Palestinians.
