New York, 25 June 2026

Several progressive candidates endorsed by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani defeated established Democratic rivals in city primary elections, signaling a shift in the local party ahead of the 2028 presidential contest.

The primaries, held on Tuesday, covered all 435 seats in the New York City Council, which are up for election every two years. Candidates aligned with Mamdani won several marquee races, prompting CNN to describe the mayor as the "neuen Strippenzieher" — the new power broker — pressuring the Democratic establishment.

Among the night's most closely watched results was the contest in a district covering parts of Brooklyn and Queens, where 32-year-old Darializa Avila Chevalier, a doctoral student and pro-Palestinian activist, defeated 71-year-old incumbent Adriano Espaillat. Avila Chevalier, a Muslim woman of Dominican heritage, rose to prominence during the pro-Palestinian protest movement at Columbia University. Her victory came despite Espaillat's October 2023 statement that "Israel hat jedes Recht, sich zu verteidigen und sein Volk zu beschützen" following the Hamas attacks, a position Chevalier had publicly opposed.
