Washington, September 23, 2026

Several major U.S. newsrooms have turned to the public with an open letter protesting the media ban imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

In the document, published this Tuesday, the newsrooms sharply criticized the measure and called for the restrictions to be rescinded. The signatories base their position, among other things, on a 1974 Supreme Court ruling that explicitly strengthens the rights of the press in the United States. The newsrooms' argument is thus anchored in a supreme court decision that, in their view, the executive branch must also abide by.

The protest is directed against a ban that excluded certain media outlets from the circle of government-affiliated reporting in Washington. The newsrooms see this as an attack on press freedom and the constitutionally anchored role of an independent fourth estate. They point out that access to government officials and official information must not be made dependent on political favor.
