Nicaragua breaks off diplomatic relations with Italy after dispute over alleged ex-terrorist

The background to the conflict is the Casimirri case. The Italian is accused of involvement in the kidnapping and murder of former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro in 1978. According to Italian information, Casimirri has been living in Nicaragua since 1983 and has acquired Nicaraguan citizenship there. In Italy, he was sentenced in absentia to six life prison terms.

Murder of Aldo Moro in 1978

Tajani had accused the Nicaraguan leadership of protecting Casimirri and demanded his extradition. The Italian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed this demand in a statement. Italy had not forgotten what victims terrorism had claimed, it said. The Italian government stated verbatim: „Die italienische Regierung hat die Opfer des Terrorismus nicht vergessen und fordert weiterhin, dass die Verantwortlichen für die schwersten Verbrechen gegen den Staat und die italienischen Bürger zur Rechenschaft gezogen werden." This demand expressly also applies to Casimirri.

Nicaragua rejected the accusations and described Tajani's statements as „ungerechtfertigten, aggressiven und unverantwortlichen Äußerungen". With the break in diplomatic relations, Managua reacted directly to these declarations. The Foreign Ministry in Managua spoke of a step as a response to the behavior of the Italian minister. This escalates a bilateral conflict that has been simmering for days.

Nicaragua's reaction

The Moro case is one of the darkest chapters of Italian post-war history. Aldo Moro, then chairman of the Christian Democrats, was kidnapped in Rome in March 1978 by a Red Brigades commando. During the kidnapping, five bodyguards were shot dead. Moro's body was found 55 days later in a car in Rome. The Red Brigades committed numerous murders and attacks during the so-called "lead years"; in Germany, parallels were drawn to the Red Army Faction (RAF).

Italy had repeatedly demanded Casimirri's extradition and had him placed on the wanted list via Interpol, among other channels. Since Casimirri has since acquired Nicaraguan citizenship, a transfer is legally and politically difficult. Nicaragua had previously always refused extradition. With the current break in relations, the diplomatic dispute is intensifying further.

Observers assess Nicaragua's step as unusually harsh. A complete break in diplomatic relations between two countries is a clear signal and usually goes hand in hand with the closure of embassies and the expulsion of diplomats. The government in Managua has been criticized internationally for years and is classified as authoritarian by several Western states. The current conflict with Italy fits into a series of diplomatic disagreements. Tajani had made his move at a meeting of the European People's Party in Madrid, that is, on a platform of the European center-right party family, which additionally politicized the affair.
