The Nicaraguan judiciary has revoked the professional license of around 2,000 lawyers without stating reasons. Human rights advocates see this as a further step toward restricting defense rights under President Daniel Ortega.

In Nicaragua, the authorities have revoked the work permits of around 2,000 lawyers without justification and removed their names from the registry of the Supreme Court, according to the news agency AFP.

The measure was carried out without any prior notice and without due process, the Nicaraguan daily "La Prensa" reported on Thursday (local time). According to the paper, lawyers from across the country are affected, losing their licenses overnight. According to "La Prensa," the deleted names had not appeared in recent days in the public registry of the supreme judicial authority, without explanation.

One affected lawyer, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, interpreted the move as a political signal. "It is a political message of control and repression," she said. The move sends a message to Nicaraguans that "they cannot simply choose any lawyer, but only those who enjoy privileges under the regime," explained the woman, whose name had likewise been struck from the registry.
