In a suicide attack on a demonstration in the northwestern Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, at least nine people were killed, according to security sources.

The attack occurred on Saturday in Swat district, an area that has repeatedly been the target of violence in the past. According to police officials, an attacker detonated himself in the midst of the rally participants. In addition to the nine dead, there were initially no confirmed figures on the number of wounded.

According to local reports, the demonstration was part of a protest movement against the ongoing violence in the region. Eyewitnesses told AFP of a loud explosion, followed by screams and chaos at the square. Rescue workers transported the wounded to surrounding hospitals.
