In Austria, 90 percent of groundwater levels are low, according to the Environment Ministry, even though the country is one of the most water-rich in Europe.

As data from the Environment Ministry shows, 90 percent of groundwater levels in Austria are currently low. This makes for an unfavorable balance for underground water reserves in a country generally considered water-rich. "Austria is one of the most water-rich countries in Europe," the Ministry says – and in precisely such a country, widespread low levels are a warning sign.

The supply to the population is closely tied to groundwater: around 55 percent of drinking water comes from groundwater wells, as the Ministry explains: "around 55 percent from groundwater wells". Overall, drinking water in Austria is sourced exclusively from groundwater and spring water – other sources such as surface water or treated seawater play no role. "Drinking water comes exclusively from groundwater and spring water," the authority says.
