Vienna, June 30, 2026
Vienna has ordered water-saving measures due to a sharp increase in drinking water consumption during a heatwave and has called on residents to use water carefully.
The Vienna water authority MA 31 announced on Tuesday that daily water consumption in the capital is currently up to 580,000 cubic meters – equivalent to 580 million liters. The reason is the heatwave that has persisted since mid-June, with temperatures well above 30 degrees, leading to more watering, showering, and drinking. According to the city, consumption is around 45 percent above the average daily value.
Compared to July of the previous year, this represents a significant increase: in 2025, peak daily consumption reached at most 510 million liters. MA 31 spoke of the maximum annual consumption figure being reached. The situation is being closely monitored, officials said.
