As of Thursday, 11:00 a.m., no new illnesses connected to the current Legionella outbreak have been registered in Basel; five people remain in hospital treatment.
Current situation in Basel
The responsible authorities in Basel reported the all-clear on Thursday morning: as of 11:00 a.m., no new Legionella cases had been added. The number of registered infections within the scope of the ongoing outbreak therefore remains unchanged.
Five patients are still being treated in hospital. The authorities have so far provided no further information regarding their condition, the exact time of infection, or any possible pre-existing conditions.
Legionnaires' disease is caused by bacteria of the genus Legionella, which multiply in warm water – for example in water pipes, cooling towers, or air-conditioning systems. The pathogens are inhaled through fine water droplets and can cause a severe form of pneumonia. According to the current state of knowledge, direct transmission from person to person is not possible.
