According to a person familiar with the matter, North Korea is moving a missile unit to Russia whose KN-23-type ballistic cruise missiles could be intended for attacks on Ukraine.

The transfer was confirmed to Reuters by a person familiar with the matter. According to this, the United States is aware of the maneuver. No public information has yet been provided on the scope, exact location, or timeline of the troop movement.

The background to the concern is the North Korean short-range missile KN-23. According to Ukrainian assessments, the system has a range of around 700 kilometers and thus exceeds the Russian Iskander-M, which typically flies 500 to 550 kilometers, by about 150 to 200 kilometers. This means targets in the Ukrainian hinterland can be attacked from a greater distance.
