Nvidia said on Thursday it has agreed to acquire artificial intelligence platform Hugging Face for $13 billion, combining one of the most popular open-source model hubs with the chipmaker's AI infrastructure business.
The acquisition, announced by both companies, is intended to bring Hugging Face's model repository and developer tools closer to Nvidia's chips and software stack. Hugging Face operates a widely used platform where researchers and companies publish, fine-tune and deploy open-source AI models, and the deal would give Nvidia deeper integration between those tools and its hardware.
Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang framed the transaction as a way to strengthen the platform rather than narrow it. The company's infrastructure, engineering and global reach "can help improve platform reliability, safety, model evaluation, inference and deployment capabilities, while preserving the open ecosystem that made Hugging Face foundational," Huang said in a statement released by Nvidia.
