Vienna, July 1, 2026
The ÖAMTC air rescue service completed its 500,000th mission on May 14, 2026, reaching a milestone in the more than four-decade history of Austrian air rescue.
The anniversary mission was flown by "Christophorus 18," the emergency medical helicopter stationed in Frauenkirchen in Burgenland since January 2025. It was dispatched to a neurological emergency in northern Burgenland. After successful initial treatment, the patient was flown to Vienna General Hospital (AKH Wien).
The ÖAMTC air rescue service began in 1983, when the first bases went into operation with "Christophorus 1" in Innsbruck and "Christophorus 2" in Krems. In the first year, only 191 missions were flown. A decisive step toward the nationwide emergency medical helicopter network that Austria now has was the takeover of seven locations previously operated by the Ministry of the Interior in 2001, according to Marco Trefanitz.
