The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) expect massive disruptions to passenger and freight transport in Austria, particularly in Tyrol, as a result of the announced rail closures in Germany between 2026 and 2028.
At a press conference at the Chamber of Commerce in Innsbruck on Tuesday, ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä outlined the scale of the upcoming disruptions. Particularly affected is the so-called "Deutsche Eck" between Munich and Rosenheim, which will have to be completely closed for two months in the first half of 2028.
The closure would be "extrem belastend" for the entire east-west long-distance traffic as well as international north-south freight traffic via the Brenner Pass, Matthä said.
