ÖVP politician Elisabeth Zehetner has spoken out in an energy policy debate in favor of promoting investment in storage technologies more strongly instead of expanding new photovoltaic systems.

Zehetner justified her initiative with the assessment that domestic energy supply already rests on a broad foundation. „Österreichs Energieversorgungslage ist außerordentlich stabil“, she said. A mix of hydropower, solar energy, wind power, biomass, and geothermal energy is responsible for this, securing supply across different weather conditions and seasons.

Against this backdrop, Zehetner advocates channeling public funding more strongly toward storage solutions. This would allow surplus electricity from renewable sources to be stored and retrieved when needed, rather than investing subsidy amounts through the so-called PV subsidy call into the construction of additional systems. Storage also offers the advantage of balancing fluctuations in the grid.
