World football governing body FIFA has officially confirmed that a refereeing error favored Argentina's advancement to the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
FIFA admits refereeing error
On Wednesday, FIFA released a statement in which it acknowledged a concrete refereeing error by the officiating crew during Argentina's group stage match. According to the statement, an incorrect assessment of a controversial scene in the second half significantly influenced the course of the game. The authority stressed that the Video Assistant Referee had failed to intervene in that sequence.
According to FIFA, the incident involved a possible rule violation in the penalty area that was overlooked. Neither the on-field referee nor the VAR had assessed the situation correctly. This was clearly demonstrated by the subsequent analysis conducted by the International Football Association Board. The association's bodies spoke of a human failure within the technical support system.
