Austrian household energy bills increased in April as rising crude oil costs linked to the Strait of Hormuz crisis outweighed a drop in electricity prices, the Austrian Energy Agency reported.

The Energy Price Index (EPI) for April climbed 2.6% compared to the previous month and was 10.7% above the same month a year earlier. The main driver was the military blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important transport routes for crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Super gasoline prices rose by 2.8% from March, while diesel jumped 10.1% month-on-month. Year-over-year, super gasoline was 16.7% more expensive and diesel a striking 37.2% pricier.

"Solange ein Großteil unseres Verkehrs und Teile unserer Wärmeversorgung an Rohöl hängen, schlagen Krisen wie die aktuelle unmittelbar auf die Preise durch," said Lukas Zwieb, energy expert at the Austrian Energy Agency.
