Munich's Mayor tapped the first keg of beer on Saturday morning at the Theresienwiese, thereby opening the 191st Oktoberfest.

The 191st Oktoberfest began on Saturday at 12 noon with the traditional keg-tapping in the Schottenhamel festival tent. It took only a few seconds for the tap to be set – and the sold-out halls could begin.

The procedure follows a strict ritual: Munich's Mayor enters the Schottenhamel tent, delivers a short speech, drives the tap into the keg and shouts the legendary "O'zapft is!". If the first strike succeeds, the Wiesn can begin its celebrations; if it fails, the innkeepers must reckon with unplanned waiting time.
