Stiftung Warentest tested nine mail-order pharmacies and reaches a mixed verdict: price advantages exist primarily for over-the-counter products, but only two providers received an overall grade of "good," and professional consultation frequently falls by the wayside.

Price Advantage Mainly for Over-the-Counter Products

When it comes to prices, online pharmacies can certainly score points. According to Stiftung Warentest, the amount due for a test shopping cart with five products was still around 36 percent below the manufacturer's recommended retail price, even at the most expensive of the nine checked mail-order pharmacies. For consumers who regularly buy over-the-counter remedies such as painkillers or cold medications, this results in a noticeable price advantage compared to the local pharmacy.
