OPEC+ plans production increase of 188,000 barrels per day from September, according to insiders

The development comes at a time when traditional oil companies such as Shell are benefiting from current price levels. The company had earned significantly more in the second quarter thanks to high oil and gas prices. Industry experts see this as evidence that the market situation remains favorable for the integrated corporations.

Should OPEC+ proceed with the step, it would be the first noticeable increase in production targets in some time. The Reuters news agency was one of the sources reporting on the plans. The final decision is expected at the alliance's next regular meeting, at which the future production strategy for the coming year will also be discussed.

Market participants are closely watching the signaling effect of such an increase. An additional daily volume of 188,000 barrels corresponds to around 0.2 percent of global oil demand. This volume is sufficient to trigger noticeable short-term price movements in the futures markets, particularly when demand rises as is customary during the winter months.

Significance for consumers and prices

For consumers in Europe and Asia, a higher production volume could tend to mean falling prices at the pump, although with a delay. The pass-through of crude oil prices to end customers depends on numerous factors, including exchange rates, taxes and refinery capacities. A reliable forecast of the concrete price development at gas stations is therefore currently not possible.

At the same time, analysts warn that OPEC+ wants to prevent prices from falling too sharply with a cautious expansion. Should the oil price slip below a certain level, individual member countries could only finance their already strained national budgets with great difficulty. The alliance therefore usually steers a middle course between supply and price stability.

The coming weeks are considered decisive for the final direction of OPEC+. Should the internal plans be confirmed, this would be a signal to the markets that the alliance considers the current supply situation to be sufficient.
