OpenAI has restricted access to the preview version of its new AI model lineup GPT-5.6 to a small group of trusted partners in the US, after the US government asked to review the models' capabilities beforehand.
According to OpenAI, the US government is demanding that currently only American companies and individuals receive access to the new model. "This limited release had been requested by the government," the company stated. The trigger was warnings that the safeguards against misuse of the software could potentially be circumvented.
The GPT-5.6 model family consists of three variants: Sol as the flagship model, Terra as a balanced variant for daily work use, and Luna as a fast and cost-effective option. According to OpenAI, the most powerful variant Sol can independently handle tasks in programming, biology, and cybersecurity. "In benchmark tests, increased performance was shown in the areas of programming (coding), biology, and cybersecurity," it stated.
