The first semifinal of the Soccer World Cup between Spain and France drew an average of 1.66 million viewers on ORF late in the evening.

The public-service broadcaster aired the match live starting at 9:00 p.m., delivering one of the most-watched sports broadcasts of the tournament so far. According to ORF, citing its own market research on Wednesday, the average market share in the first half stood at a strong 57 percent.

High Market Share in Both Halves

After the break, viewership rose only marginally: in the second half, an average of around 1.67 million people watched the match. In total, well over 1.6 million soccer fans in Austria followed the meeting of the two top European nations, who most recently also faced each other at the European Championship.
