According to new analyses by the Federal Statistical Office, more than half of adults in Germany are overweight; at the same time, the average weight of the population has slightly increased in recent years.

The current figures from the 2025 microcensus show that the body mass index (BMI) of a large portion of the adult population is above the threshold set by the World Health Organization (WHO) for overweight. Specifically, adults with a BMI over 25 are considered overweight, and those with a BMI over 30 are considered obese, meaning severely overweight. The survey refers to all individuals aged 18 and over.

BMI as a Measure: How Overweight is Defined

BMI as a Measure: How Overweight is Defined The BMI is a simple calculation that relates body weight in kilograms to body height in meters squared. The World Health Organization uses it as an international standard to differentiate between underweight, normal weight, and overweight. A value between 18.5 and 24.9 is therefore considered normal weight, with values above this being categorized as overweight and obese.
